Magda Havas is Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University where she teaches and does research on the biological effects of environmental contaminants. Dr. Havas received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, completed Post-Doctoral research at Cornell University, and taught at the University of Toronto before going to Trent University in Peterborough, Canada.

Health fears prompt Wi-Fi shutdown in B.C. school

An elementary school near Quesnel, B.C., is waving good-bye to its wireless internet connections due to the uncertainty about the safety of the technology.
North Cariboo Christian School, a private elementary about 10 kilometres south of Quesnel, is shutting down its Wi-Fi link.
Principal John Hengen cites what he says are known health risks related to wireless modems, and notes the school will err on the side of safety for its students. Continue reading

Health and Safety Committee
There are growing health and safety concerns regarding the widespread use of technology,
such as cellular phones and wireless computer networking (WiFi), which produce non-ionizing
electromagnetic radiation. It is estimated that at least 3 percent of the population has an
environmental sensitivity to the radiation that is emitted by these devices and, as a result,
experience serious immediate physical/biological effects when exposed. As has been the case
with other known societal health and safety issues, such as exposure to cigarette smoke or
asbestos, the health effects of unprecedented long term exposure to this radiation may not
be known for some time. Widespread use of, or exposure to, wireless communication devices
and WiFi technology in Ontario schools, can be positioned as a potential workplace hazard.
This paper examines what is currently known about the impact of non-ionizing
electromagnetic radiation, reviews the implications it can have for Ontario schools, including
OECTA members, and makes recommendations to the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’

An international panel of experts has weighed in on the controversy about cellphone safety — and come to a conclusion that falls far short of recommending that consumers put down the devices, although it may make them more anxious.
Cellphones are “possibly carcinogenic” to humans, according to the panel organized by the World Health Organization. But an exhaustive, eight-day review of hundreds of studies concluded that the existing evidence is insufficient to know for sure. And because cellphones are so popular, further research is urgently needed, the experts said.
“Possibly carcinogenic” is the WHO’s third-highest rating, falling below “carcinogenic” and “probably carcinogenic” but above “not classifiable” and “probably not carcinogenic.” Other substances that the group has categorized as “possibly carcinogenic” include talcum powder, which has been possibly linked to ovarian cancer, and low-frequency magnetic fields, which are emitted by power lines and appliances and have been possibly associated with childhood leukemia.
